I probably would have listed the combat system in the first article, haha. Again, the theory of various Mass Effects as combat tools seemed very appealing at the outset, but using them strategically is rarely if ever necessary. Most of the offensive skills are interchangeable and I ended up using whatever wasn't fried at the moment, regardless of the effect. Where squad members' abilities should have been vastly different to allow for a wider strategy, they were often just the same ability with a different graphic and much the same effect as your own, no matter how diverse I tried to make my landing party. In the end, this made the RPG element (with the ME's at least) seem irrelevant in the larger picture.

I also loved the planet details but the gap of effort between the descriptions and the actual planet/sidequest gameplay made me lose interest in the descriptions very quickly. It seems like it wouldn't have been that hard to work some of that information into meaningful advantages or moments while planetside. I would have rather seen a scaled back universe with more attention to planetside gameplay, than all that information about locations that ultimately blurred together because their related quests were absolutely unmemorable.

Though I also ended up playing the hell out of ME2, your criticisms of ME1 are exactly what made me play it for 5 hours and put it down for nearly 6 months before finishing it. While we've grown used to being able to predict the storyline and even being shoehorned into playing it the developers way (which is inexcusable, but that's another subject), the lack of true interaction really put me off. The bunker side quest you detailed is the perfect example. Games draw me in when I can pick up things, drop things, manage my inventory, etc. Everything was very distant and cold and it's exactly because of the copy and paste way sidequests played out, and the inability to manipulate the environment in any meaningful way. These stories were seldom resolved in any meaningful way which also made them feel like a chore. The Maako was such a cool idea that fell flat. The promise of being able to explore entire planets randomly is what sold me on the game to begin with (also the alien side-boob). But it was honestly one of the most poorly executed features I've ever seen in a game of this scope. A shockingly wasted opportunity.

I also kept feeling that the stupid conversation wheel would appear at times when there was no need for conversation, persuasion, or meaningful decision making. Then at times when Shepherd would have naturally needed to weigh his words carefully, that choice was taken away. It's probably a subjective complaint, but it made it impossible for me to ever really embody the character, adding to my lament that I never felt I really got to "touch" the game world. It was the gaming equivalent of wearing a condom.

Yeah, FWIW I am liking ME2 a lot more so far (and more than the first time I played it, maybe because I'm playing it back-to-back with Mass Effect). That entry will be more positive, though I am trying to crank out the things I liked about ME1 today before I forget them all!

It's just such a shame - I feel like Bioware employs writers who are capable of telling better stories. I can't tell if A. I'm wrong and they're just hacks, B. they really, really don't want to for some reason, or C. they want to but the studio leads/EA won't let them.

I like Mass Effect significantly more than you do, I think--especially the character development systems--but everything you bring up about it is pretty much 100% accurate. The story is nonsense, like pretty much every Bioware game (I'd make a case for Dragon Age, but the fat middle raises its ugly head and drops the ball like with every single Bioware game), and its paragon/renegade annoyed me more often than not. I think it works better in the next two games, if only because then character transfer spots you plenty of paragon/renegade points and your conversation skills aren't directly tied to it, so you can pick the occasional opposite option without dooming yourself.

The moment that I think perfectly sums up how awful paragon/renegade is is in ME2 (very early, in the archangel mission) where you get a renegade option to shoot a guy to get a major benefit. I have no idea how the fuck this is a renegade option, because the rest of the mission is committing mercenary genocide against people who are basically friendly, inexperienced freelancers. Is it because you shoot him in the back? Who cares? Dead is dead.

God, I think that moment is pretty much my problem with morality systems in a single instant.
